Nashville Songwriter Matt Hundley Goes Back to the Roots of Country Music |
Matt Hundley Pokes at the Nashville Pop-Country Scene and Goes "Back to Country" with His New Single
Nashville Tn. (May 23rd, 2016) - Nashville country artist Matt Hundley has joined the small but exploding movement of songwriters rebelling against the confines of the pop country industry with his upcoming single, "Back to Country". The song is gritty and honest, but still a fun, energetic, and positive tune with an undeniably catchy melody. The track is scheduled to impact radio on Monday, June 20th 2016.
Riding the momentum of his growing success as a songwriter, (His latest cut features rocker Jessie G and country superstar Gretchen Wilson) he has launched his artist career at the crossroads of country and Americana. Backed by the band of country outlaw legend Shooter Jennings, the fiddle and steel driven tracks reach back to the roots of "America's genre", while Matt Hundley's lyrics and unique voice provide a unique, fresh take on country music. Much like his live performances, Matt rebels against the norm of fronting a song on guitar, and instead leads the way with his boot-stomping fiddle, in a style reminiscent of Charlie Daniels. "Back to County" keeps a humorous feel as Matt sings about initially moving to Nashville and selling out to the pop country movement, then finally "Going back to country" as he becomes frustrated with the bland, auto-tuned "Nashville sound" and the blatant disrespect to women that is contained in many current country song lyrics. I'm going back to country, I don't have your love for fame and money I can get by with the clothes that are on my back Leave the auto-tune to ol' T-Payne, keep your snapback hat, and golden chain 'Cause I don't sing, and I don't live like that "I spent several years playing with a pop-country band, and believed there was no market for the kind of music I love. My debut EP was really kind of a sell-out. Most of the songs sounded more like rock or pop tracks, which just wasn't me. I grew up playing rootsy, genuine, and simple music. The songs I listened to and played were bluegrass, gospel, and country artists like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Ricky Skaggs, and Charlie Daniels. I fell for the myth that I had to fit into this restrictive mold created by the music industry. Then one day, not long after I moved to Nashville, I just kind of snapped. I went solo and started playing small bars and honky tonks around the country. Instead of a van or bus, I was touring in a 1999 Pontiac, often sleeping in the backseat and driving an average of over 1000 miles a week. Since then, I've been building my fan base 1 person at a time, and I'm so excited to watch it finally paying off as I play for crowds that actually care about the songs that really mean something to me." In keeping with the true country vibe, "Back to Country" is produced by Scotty Schultz, long time drummer for country outlaw Shooter Jennings, and features Matthew Lee and Johnny Stanton from Jenning's band, as well as CJ Udeen, pedal steel player for Gary Allan. The song with be available via digital outlets June 20th. For more information, please visit MattHundleyMusic.com, or contact Melody Records. |
